What Makes This Recipe Great

Do yourself a favor and throw some plant milk and probiotics into an instant pot, yogurt maker, or slow cooker. 15 hours later, you’ll have Homemade Vegan Yogurt, and you can begin a vicious vegan yogurt-making cycle using the live active cultures from your first batch to keep it going!

I love making it myself because 1) I don’t like homemade or store-bought coconut yogurts, and almost all vegan options out there are coconut milk yogurt, and 2) soy yogurt is hard to find in the US because soy has been villainized here, but it’s high in protein, super neutral in flavor and my personal favorite. Plus, while there are some great plant-based yogurts out there, non-dairy yogurt is quite pricey, and making it at home is quite easy and much less expensive than buying it at grocery stores.

It’s gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free yogurt that has only two ingredients and endless options for toppings, mixins, and more! With a creamy texture and the perfect consistency, you will love this delicious treat!

Ingredient Notes

  • plant milk of choice: Must be a single ingredient, with no gums or additives. I personally love soy yogurt, but you can use your favorite brand and plant-based milk.
  • vegan probiotic capsules: 25 billion CFU. You can find vegan options at your local grocery store like Sprouts, Whole Foods, or other specialty stores. You can also find these online.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add milk of choice into the Instant Pot. Add vegan probiotic capsules, empty the contents into the pot, and give a gentle stir to combine.
  2. Hit the yogurt setting for 13-15 hours (adjust based on your preferred tangy-ness).
  3. If desired, adjust taste and sweetness with a liquid sweetener of choice (maple syrup, cane sugar, vanilla flavor, and more.), then transfer the mixture to an airtight, sterile container and store it in the fridge.

Secrets to Success

  • I think soy milk makes the best vegan yogurt, but you can use plant-based alternatives like cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk, and more. Just make sure you use the unsweetened flavor and choose a non-dairy milk brand that doesn’t contain any additives or gums.
  • The probiotics in yogurt promote good gut bacteria and add a tangy flavor to the yogurt. This is essential to the homemade yogurt-making process, so don’t skip!

Serving Tips

Serve your vegan yogurt in a bowl with any of your favorite toppings, add it to smoothies or recipes that call for yogurt, or turn it into dessert. Here are some toppings, different flavors, and recipes I love!

  • Granola
  • Fresh Berries: Blueberry, Strawberry, Raspberry, or Blackberry
  • Chia Jam
  • Banana Jam
  • Fresh Fruit: Mango, Pineapple, Coconut, Peach, and more.
  • Vanilla Bean
  • Nuts: Cashews, Almonds, and more.

Storage Tips

Store the plain yogurt in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Store toppings separately and add when serving.

  1. I don't have an instant pot or a yogurt maker. Can I do this in a crock pot? If so, how long should I leave it o. for?
    1. Hi! I think you could but I have not tried it myself and am not super familiar with timing for that. I'd say keep tasting it to see when it starts to get more tangy
