What is Matcha Butter?

This delicious spread is a compound butter made by blending matcha green tea powder with butter! In this case, we’re making a vegan butter version that turns out absolutely delicious and creamy with that earthy matcha flavor we all love.

Plus, it has all the antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and health benefits of matcha mixed right in! This butter spread can be used on toast, baked goods, or as an ingredient in recipes to add a unique, antioxidant-rich flavor. Yum!

  • Softened Vegan Butter: If you’re finding this recipe and aren’t vegan, feel free to substitute regular butter. You can use unsalted butter or salted butter, depending on your preference.
  • Hot Water
  • Ceremonial Grade Matcha
  • Organic Granulated Sugar
  • Vanilla Bean Paste or Vanilla Extract

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cut room temperature butter into chunks and add to your food processor along with sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl or matcha bowl, sift the matcha powder by pushing it through the sifter with a spoon. Add hot water and use a bamboo whisk to incorporate the matcha into the water, whisking in an “M” or “W” shaped motion. The mixture should be glossy and thick, with no clumps remaining.
  3. Pour the thick matcha mixture into the food processor and process on high until fully incorporated with the rest of the ingredients. You may need to pause and scrape the sides down using a rubber spatula between pulses.
  4. Once smooth, transfer to an airtight container to store in the refrigerator for up to one week, or enjoy immediately!
