What is Dragon Fruit?

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, is a tropical fruit that comes from several different varieties of cactus in Central America. It has a unique appearance, with bright pink or yellow skin and white flesh or red flesh speckled with tiny black seeds, similar to a kiwi.

Dragon fruit is known for its subtly sweet, mild taste and is often described as a blend of kiwi and pear. It’s rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and adds so much goodness to smoothies and smoothie bowls!

Plus, its bright magenta color makes it the prettiest drink, full of tropical flavors and the most creamy texture. The most delicious way to start the day!

What Makes This Recipe Great

It’s smoothie week, and I’m sharing a new smoothie recipe every single day, starting with this Pink Pitaya Smoothie! Introducing a gorgeous, vibrant pink dragon fruit smoothie with tart and fruity raspberry and mango.

It’s creamy and rich thanks to vegan yogurt and plant milk to blend and packs in a nice amount of plant protein to make it a balanced, easy breakfast or snack. Plus, it’s vegan, gluten-free, and full of amazing health benefits!

Smoothies are one of the easiest things you can make because all you need to do is throw everything into a high-speed blender and let it do its thing! They are extremely customizable, and you can adjust the texture to your liking to turn it into more of a spoonable smoothie bowl or a sippable smoothie to go.

How to Make a Pink Dragon Fruit Smoothie

To make this dragon fruit smoothie recipe, we’re using frozen bananas and pitaya (or dragon fruit), raspberries, and optional mango chunks to give the homemade smoothie a creamy and thick texture.

Ingredient Notes

  • Frozen banana: Use super-ripe bananas that have been in the freezer. The frozen fruit makes this smoothie cold without the need for additional ice.
  • Fresh or frozen pitaya (dragon fruit): You can really use fresh dragon fruit or frozen– it doesn’t make a difference here! This adds a beautiful vibrant color to the drink.
  • Frozen raspberries
  • Frozen mango
  • Vegan vanilla yogurt
  • Non-dairy plant-based milk: Oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk all work really well. Take your pick!

Optional

  • Vanilla protein powder: Add a scoop of protein powder for an extra-filling smoothie.
  • Maple syrup: I don’t find that this healthy smoothie needs any added sugar, but if you want some added sweetness, maple syrup is a great option.
  • Hemp seeds or chia seeds: As always, you can add additional sources of protein, nuts, or seeds if desired.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to the blender unit. I recommend starting with very little plant milk if you prefer a thicker texture and using a smoothie with a tamper to help move things along as you blend.
  2. If needed, scrape down the sides of the blender unit with a spatula. For a thinner texture, add as much plant milk as you’d like! It’ll be much easier to blend, too.
  3. Blend until the desired texture is achieved, and enjoy!

Best Plant-Based Protein Powder

To make this dragon fruit smoothie, I recommend either an unflavoured or vanilla-flavored protein powder. My personal favorite plant protein powder is Sprout Living’s Epic Plant Protein

Sprout Living Protein is formulated without any added gums, fillers, or natural flavors, which are commonly found in protein powders. It’s smooth, adds nice volume and texture to the smoothie, and the vanilla protein adds a dessert-y flavor to any drink!

Secrets to Success

  • Customize: What I love most about smoothies is that they’re so easily customizable. If you need some extra greens, add a handful of spinach or kale. If you want more tropical flavor, throw in mango and pineapple and use coconut milk. For a more berry-forward smoothie, add strawberries and blueberries to the raspberries and dragon fruit.
  • Tropical Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl: If you’re hoping to spoon your smoothie instead of sipping it, simply add more ice cubes and less milk to your blender. It should be pretty thick. Add it to a bowl with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!

Serving Suggestions

  • This smoothie makes a delicious plant protein-rich breakfast, pre-workout or post-workout snack!
  • Enjoy it as a smoothie bowl, make it extra thick in texture, and add toppings of choice like granola, additional vegan yogurt, and fresh fruit to top.
  • Take it in a travel cup for a quick boost of plant protein on the go.
  • Boost the nutrition by adding a handful of seeds and/or nuts, and if you’re not afraid to part with the pink color, feel free to add veggies of choice like spinach, kale, or zucchini!

Storage Tips and Meal Prep

If you’d like to meal prep a breakfast smoothie, you can prepare this smoothie in advance.

Prepare by storing all ingredients together in a freezer-safe airtight container so you can dump and blend with plant milk in the morning, or you can blend the entire smoothie, store it in a freezer-safe container, and let it thaw when you’re ready to enjoy on the go.

If you have any leftover smoothie that isn’t enough to save for a whole smoothie, pour it into popsicle molds and freeze for an easy smoothie pop!
