Why You’ll Love This Latte

I love switching up my traditional matcha latte – whether it be a matcha chai latte, an earl grey matcha latte, or this cherry vanilla matcha latte – it’s fun to experiment with flavors! If you’ve seen the viral cherry latte going around– this is my matcha version (of course!). It is a celebration of harmonious flavours and mindful nourishment. The vibrant green of ceremonial-grade matcha (I use Frauth Matcha!) is not only so pretty but also provides a gentle caffeine boost, giving you alertness without the jitters.

The homemade cherry syrup adds a natural sweetness and a burst of fruity goodness which perfectly complements the matcha’s earth flavour. Using your preferred plant-based milk makes sure the drink is creamy and delicious. Making this latte at home allows for customization to suit your taste preferences and dietary needs and saves you money.

Ingredient Notes

recipe ingredients in small bowls

Cherry Vanilla Syrup

  • Organic cane sugar: Adds the perfect touch of sweetness. You can substitute maple syrup or coconut sugar if preferred.
  • Whole cherries (pitted): Bring natural fruity sweetness and a gorgeous colour to the syrup. Frozen cherries work too.
  • Cherry juice: Intensifies the cherry flavour and enhances the syrup’s flavour. You can experiment with other juices if you want!
  • Filtered water: Helps get the consistency of the syrup just right.
  • Vanilla bean paste: Adds a rich, floral sweetness that pairs with the cherry flavours perfectly. Vanilla extract works too, but the paste gives a deeper flavour.

Latte

  • Plant milk of choice: Creates a creamy, dreamy base that carries all the flavours. Oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk all work beautifully – use your favourite!
  • Cherry vanilla syrup: Infuses the drink with fruity sweetness and warm vanilla depth.
  • Matcha + hot water: The heart of this latte, offering earthy richness, gentle caffeine, and vibrant green colour. Be sure to use ceremonial grade for the smoothest taste.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cherry Vanilla Syrup

Step 1: Add the cherry juice, sugar, water, and whole cherries to a pot. Cook down on low heat until the cherries become tender and all the sugar has been dissolved (about 3-5 minutes). Roughly break up the cherry pieces with a spatula. The mixture shouldn’t bubble, so remove from heat if needed. Once combined, add vanilla bean paste and stir in.

Assemble the Cherry Vanilla Matcha Latte

Step 2: Prepare a glass with ice and heat water to 175F. Sift matcha into a bowl then whisk with a bamboo whisk until smooth and no clumps remain. To the glass, add syrup, milk and top off with matcha. Stir and enjoy!

Secrets to Success

  • Using ceremonial-grade matcha ensures a smooth, non-bitter flavour and vibrant colour. Like I mentioned above, I use Frauth Matcha.
  • Avoid using boiling water for matcha, as it can scorch the powder and result in bitterness.
  • Adjust the amount of cherry vanilla syrup to suit your personal taste preferences.
  • Buy a heart shaped ice cube tray to make cute little cherry juice ice cubes to top your latte with! They’re super cute.

Serving Tips

  • To enjoy this latte warm, skip the ice and heat your plant milk before combining it with the syrup and matcha.
  • For an aesthetically pleasing layered effect, pour the matcha over the back of a spoon onto the milk mixture.
  • Make this latte for breakfast and enjoy it with a tofu bagel and vegan bacon, or have it for a snack with some vegan muddy buddies!

Storage Tips

Store any leftover cherry vanilla syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Prepare a larger batch of syrup to have on hand for quick and easy latte assembly throughout the week.
