It’s that time of year where the cold and flu are common, so I’m excited to share 5 Vegan Recipes to Boost Your Immune System! These are recipes I come back to when I start to notice a sniffle come on. I’ll also make these recipes when I’m feeling under the weather or whenever flu season comes around. They feature key ingredients that work to support your immune system, and are rich in vitamins and minerals that prevent illness. Of course, you can support the body with vitamins, but I believe that food is medicine so I like to go right to the source!
All these recipes are vegan, anti-inflammatory, immune system boosting and very healthy. They’re whole food plant based, made with no added oils, refined sugars or gluten, just plants to support your immunity. So what’s in these recipes, you ask?
The recipes highlight ingredients known for their anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties. For example, turmeric, which contains curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a strong antioxidant. Other ingredients include ginger, citrus fruits rich in vitamin C, and you’ll notice that the foods are all very golden in colour. The orange and yellow colour in these ingredients is an indicator of high amounts of beta carotene, which our bodies convert into Vitamin A. In addition to these recipes, it’s always a great idea to snack on vibrant orange and yellow produce like carrots, oranges, grapefruit and pineapple.
Hands down one of my top 5 recipes to date! This is a reader fave and has converted many turmeric haters, including yours truly. The combination of turmeric, cacao and warming spices like cinnamon make this a delicious hot chocolate-y drink with a kick. Enjoy it hot or cold and don’t be surprised if this becomes your new favourite nightcap.
If it’s warm where you live, how about a refreshing smoothie bowl? This Sunshine Healer Smoothie Bowl is a delicious way to pack in citrus and vitamin C from tropical fruits. You’ll also sneak in some immune boosting ingredients! Enjoy it as a smoothie or turn it into a bowl–any way you have it, it’s delicious and gorgeous in colour!
Listen, snacks are never not essential… in my life anyway. These Lemon Turmeric Bliss Balls are great on-the-go immune boosting bites and perfectly mask the turmeric flavour. They kind of taste like lemon sorbet if you ask me! Perfect for picky eaters or to satisfy your sweet tooth and support immunity all at once.
This side dish is not only immune boosting, it’s also packed with flavour and can be easily integrated into your favourite recipes. Got a dish you like to eat with rice? Swap it out for some of this Golden Garlic Quinoa instead for extra protein, fiber and immune system support. Turmeric gives this quinoa a boost, but did you know garlic is also a wonderful food to eat when feeling under the weather?
It doesn’t get much cozier than this Carrot Tahini Soup. This easy to make soup is vibrant in colour and pretty vibrant in flavour too ???? The warming spices give the soup a smoky flavour and are protective for our bodies. This is the perfect quick lunch or dinner you need in your life!
