Why You’ll Love This Non-Alcoholic Michelada Recipe
I’ve permanently removed alcohol from my life, so when I first got to LA and was introduced to a Michelada, I knew I wanted to create a mocktail version, veganizing it at the same time! A traditional michelada has a cold beer base, tomato juice, sauces, and flavorful spices, making it a savoury, umami cocktail. The good news? My virgin version uses *almost* the exact same ingredients – just non-alcoholic and vegan – so they taste incredibly similar.
Typically, this cocktail is made with ingredients like Worcestershire sauce (which contains fish sauce or anchovy) and sometimes clam juice so it isn’t vegan-friendly. My version uses incredible vegan substitutes like non-alcoholic beer as its base, tomato juice, fresh lime juice, tamari, vegan Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, + fresh limes, coarse/flaky salt, and tajin for the rim!
I’m a firm believer in adjusting to taste and I think that’s key for this recipe, especially. So taste as you go and add more or less of what you like! If you like Bloody Marys, you’ll love this too.

Secrets to Success
- Use spicy tomato juice instead of regular tomato juice for a spicy mocktail!
- Speaking of spice, mix some chili powder in with your salt and tajin to add an extra kick to your rim. You can also stir chili powder into your drink mixture.
- Choose a non-alcoholic beer that mimics the taste of regular beer.
- Use fresh lime juice if possible! Fresh lime juice always has a better, zesty flavor and will make your mocktail even better.
- Chill your glass before serving, this drink is best cold.
- Don’t skimp on your garnishes, they make this drink so delicious!

The label “virgin” refers to a non-alcoholic cocktail. A virgin michelada, therefore, contains no alcohol.
If you don’t want to use non-alcoholic beer you can use sparkling lime juice instead! Just know that the flavor will be different.
