Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and whisk over medium heat, bringing to a soft simmer.
If using dates to sweeten, remove pan from heat and transfer mixture to a blender (or, use hand blender) and blend until smooth and frothy.
Serve with vegan marshmallows!
Secrets to Success
- For the best flavor, make sure you’re using cacao powder instead of sweetened cocoa powder. Cacao powder has a bit of a different nutritional profile than cocoa, however, you can absolutely use cocoa powder to substitute if you have it on hand!
- If you’d like to swap oat milk for an alternative dairy-free milk, you absolutely can. Opt for a richer, creamier plant milk for best results.
- Finally, just because hot chocolate isn’t hot chocolate with marshmallows, make sure you top it off with some vegan marshmallows. I opted to home-make some vegan marshmallows using this recipe, but I’ll also include a store-bought option in the recipe notes!
- If feeling super festive, feel free to garnish with a vegan candy cane! Or add a drop of peppermint extract to your cocoa.
