This easy Scallion Oil recipe will be one of your favorite condiments in no time! Simple, fresh ingredients infused and transformed into a kitchen staple. Make scallion oil noodles, rice dishes, dressings, marinades, and more!

What is Scallion Oil?

Scallion oil, or Green Onion Oil is a popular condiment in Chinese cuisine! It’s made by quite simply infusing green onions into hot oil, then cooling and using for a variety of dishes: noodles, stir-fries, rice, roasted veggies, marinades & dressings, and more! 

What Makes This Recipe Great

Well first things first, it’s only TWO, yes TWO ingredients! All you need is a neutral oil (olive oil, avocado oil, etc) and scallions (aka green onions). With these two simple ingredients, the magic happens and your Scallion Oil is made (and has SO many uses!). The flavor and aroma are out of this world. 

It’s a super easily customized recipe too– depending on your flavor preferences you can make variations to fit your palate: garlic, spicy, fresh ginger, herb-infused, citrus, toasted sesame oil, and more! 

And if you’re wondering: Scallion=Green Onion. You may also see Spring Onions, and while they are similar, this variety of onions has subtle differences. For this recipe, stick to Green Onions/Scallions. 

Ingredient Notes

  • Neutral oil: Use extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or another neutral oil of choice (canola oil or vegetable oil also work). 
  • Fresh scallions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Slice off the white parts of the scallions stalks, then cut the remaining green parts of the scallions into 3-4 inch pieces.
  2. Transfer to a small saucepan or small pot along with oil on medium heat and cook until the scallions start to sizzle. 
  3. If you have a thermometer, bring the oil temperature to 180F and let the mixture cook at this temperature for 2-3 minutes. Turn the heat off and transfer the fried scallions and oil to a high-speed blender or food processor.
  4. While still hot, blend the mixture for 5 minutes on the highest speed setting.
  5. Prepare a large bowl of ice and a small bowl on top along with a sieve and a piece of cheesecloth to line the sieve. Pour the oil mixture through the cheesecloth-lined sieve and into the bowl over ice.
  6. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container immediately. I like to store it in a mason jar. Cover the jar with foil to keep the sunlight from dulling the color and flavor. Keep it in the fridge.

How to Use Scallion Oil

Customize the oil to your liking with infusing ingredients such as chili oil, ginger, garlic, or salt, or leave it as is. Use it for your favorite Chinese food dishes or other delicious vegan dishes. Start small, then taste and add more to your liking. Here are some great options:

  • Noodles: Drizzle over noodles to add flavor to any dish.
  • Rice dishes: Use as a topping for steamed rice or fried rice to enhance flavor.
  • Dumplings: It is often used as a dipping sauce for dumplings, particularly in northern Chinese cuisine.
  • Stir-fry: It can be used as a base or finishing oil for stir-fried veggies and tofu to add a rich, oniony flavor.
  • Marinades: Use to infuse veggies and plant-based proteins with flavor before cooking.
  • Salads: Add savory flavor to a salad by using this as an ingredient in salad dressing. 

Storage Tips

I like to store mine in a mason jar with its tight-fitting lid. Cover the jar with foil to keep the sunlight from dulling the color and flavor. Keep it in the fridge and use within 1-2 weeks.

Easy 2-Ingredient Scallion Oil Recipe

This easy Scallion Oil recipe will be one of your favorite condiments in no time! Simple, fresh ingredients infused and transformed into a kitchen staple. Use for noodles, rice dishes, dressings, marinades, and more! 

Ingredients 

  • 3/4 cup neutral oil
  • 25-30 scallions

Instructions 

  • Slice white stem off of the scallions, then cut the remaining green tops into 3-4” pieces.
  • Transfer to a small heavy bottomed pot along with oil on medium heat and cook until the scallions start to sizzle.
  • If you have a thermometer, bring the oil temperature to 180F and let the mixture cook at this temperature for 2-3 minutes. Turn the heat off and transfer the contents to a high speed blender.
  • While still hot, blend the mixture for 5 minutes on the highest speed setting.
  • Prepare a larger bowl of ice and a smaller bowl on top along with a sieve and piece of cheesecloth to line the sieve. Pour the oil mixture through the cheese cloth lined sieve and into the bowl over ice.
  • Transfer the mixture to an airtight container immediately. I like to store in a mason jar. Cover the jar with foil to keep the sunlight from dulling the colour and flavor. Keep in the fridge.
