There’s a lot of mixed information out there about whether to snack, or not to snack. One thing’s for sure: snacks are an important food group in my life, and today I’ll explain why PLUS share some of my favourite vegan snacks from Brandless with you. I partnered with Brandless today in the spirit of Veganuary, the month-long initiative where people try going vegan for the month of January. Snacks and transitioning into veganism are very much related, which I’ll explain in a moment, so without further ado, let’s chat snacks.
P.S. In case you’re unfamiliar with Brandless, they’re an online grocery & more site with incredible prices, and you can choose between core values like organic, non-GMO, vegan, etc. It’s where I usually buy my maple syrup, ground flax seeds and tahini!
WHY I SNACK
If you know anything about me, then you probably already know my stance on snacks. I snack. And I snack often. I snack because I fully believe in listening to your body and huger cues. In other words, eating when I’m hungry, and not eating when I’m not. Sometimes that happens at odd times of the day or in between meals. Or maybe I’m a little bit hungry, but not enough to have a full on, sit down meal.
I find that doing this is really helpful because I often find myself out of the house for longer than expected, when meetings run long for example. I also find snacks come to my rescue post workout classes, pre workout sometimes, or while I’m on the go running errands. Snacking works for me because when I don’t snack, I find that one of two things tends to happen. Either 1: I end up out and about with no good vegan options available to me or 2: I end up being a little too hungry in between meals that I’ll end up overeating when I do finally eat, OR opting for something super unhealthy.
In relation to Veganuary, I think snacking is key to success as you transition into a vegan diet for similar reasons. First of all, it’s never fun to go hangry. Like ever. Second of all, preparation is key. You never want to be caught without a quick emergency snack if let’s say, you can’t find a good vegan option where you’re eating. It’s in moments like that where you may end up having to settle for something that isn’t vegan, out of necessity. Yes, it takes a little more preparation and thought, but I find it’s always worth it, or you can get into the habit of just throwing a few quick snacks in your bag at all times. Not only will you always have a back up snack, but you’ll also save a lot of money munching on snacks from home versus impulse buy snacks on the go.
BEST VEGAN BRANDLESS SNACKS
Brandless has a really fun feature where you can streamline products by value. I always love to browse the vegan section, which is constantly growing. In addition to the items listed there, there are also a few “accidentally” vegan snacks offered as well, so below, I’m listening my personal faves worth trying.
1. Dark Chocolate Covered Quinoa Bites
Vegan, gluten-free, chocolate covered… yum. This is by far my favourite snack and it’s hard to eat just a few at a time. Perfect for sweet tooths, or to satisfy a chocolate craving. Definitely try this one!
2. Sea Salt Quinoa Chips
Another quinoa based snack! This is a super crunchy, savoury snack that is gluten free and delicious. It’s really great with hummus, or your favourite vegan cheese.
3. Vegetable Chips
Colourful veggie chips that are gluten-free and also kid approved! My little baby cousin LOVES these and always steals them from me when I bring them over.
4. Organic Black Pepper & Truffle Oil Popcorn
This. is. so. good. I was introduced to this popcorn at the last Brandless pop up event in NYC and it’s super light, but also rich in flavour. If you’re a savoury kind of snack person, you’ll love this one.
5. Everything Pretzel Thins
*not gluten-free, but vegan. Imagine a bagel thin… with everything bagel seasoning on it. These are so good and got such rave review from friends that I had to try just one. It was so good, so if you can handle gluten, absolutely *add to cart*!!!
6. Raw Almonds
Self explanatory 🙂 Really great for energy, some protein and of course, delicious!
